A Letter to My First Year Netballer

My Darling,

Today is your first game of Netball and I couldn’t be happier or more excited for you. Part of me wants to wrap you up in cotton wool to protect you from the sting of the ball landing in your hands on those cold, early mornings or when you fall to the ground in a tangle for the ball. But with bumps and scrapes aside, I can’t wait to see you on the court, your big, beautiful smile with gap teeth and all. However before you take the court here are some things that I need you to know.…

You’re going to have so much fun! It’s a game like no other. Win, lose or draw you’ll make friends for life and learn a great few lessons too.

I’ll be your number one fan (not too embarrassing I hope!), your doctor, your coach, your taxi and your friend. I’ll bring out oranges to your team mates at half time, or perhaps Dad will do it, because I know how proud he is too!

You will learn to take turns in sitting on the bench and rotating across all positions. That’s what you sign up to when you join a team.

I’m really looking forward to watching this adventure mould you and begin to teach you many important life lessons. You’ll learn that playing netball is going to make you feel bold and strong as you push yourself out of your comfort zone each week. I want you to learn that things don’t always go to plan, but it’s how you respond to the set backs, that make you a winner.

Every pass, goal, rebound, intercept, sprint and every high five, will continue to help shape you into the magnificent person, sister, friend and team mate that I already know you will be.

You’ll learn the importance of friends and the meaning of team. Your team will turn into your tribe! Together you’ll train, play, laugh, cry, dance and most importantly have fun with.

They’ll be your netball family. You’ll hear them call “here if you need”, that’s the netball code and will remind you that you are never alone on the netball court.

You’ll learn how to support your team mates when they’re having an off day – the same way they will for you when you have a bad day.

This is one of the proudest moments of my life, watching you run out onto that court for the first time. I’m sure the pride and the smiles won’t stop from here as this is only the beginning.

Your no. 1 fan.
